CLASSIFIED FEAT. B.O.B., “HIGHER” – RT!. Is “Weird Science” a horror film? It sounds like the creepiest movie ever. According to the proper authorities it’s a “teen sci-fi comedy.” “What About Bob?” is also a comedy I guess and that gave me nightmares, so maybe there’s something super fucked up about the mid-’80s – early ’90s that our Judd Apatow-catered moralistic times will never be able to comprehend. Anyway, Classified and B.O.B.’s new video is super creepy on multiple levels (golems, pedophile, straight depersonalizing objectivity) and tops Hannah Lux Davis’s “23” for “most uncomfortable use of Michael Jordan-themed lingerie in a music video” (no easy feat). This is at least the second video this month to pointlessly quote an ’80s/’90s teen movie, and I hope the trends stops soon. Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX did an immaculately faithful treatment of “Clueless,” but all it really did was make me want to re-watch the original. Not that there’s no virtue in paying tribute to what came before, but the cool thing about computers is that you can re-watch John Hughes movies in the original without paying radio-friendly rappers to re-do them. Is this our generation’s version of Civil War re-enactments? No one watches Civil War re-enactments; they only exist for the fun of the participants. Maybe this isn’t all that different.
