PHARRELL WILLIAMS, “MARILYN MONROE” – LUIS CERVERO. I’ll leave it to someone else to decide whether “Marilyn Monroe” is “good for women” or anti-Feminist. I don’t really care. What we have here is the kind of video that you almost never see anymore from anyone but Beyoncé – great choreography, immaculate jump cuts, multiple costume changes, matching sets, phenomenal back-up dancers. It’s rare to see men making this kind of clip – even dance-based acts like Chris Brown usually put hyper-masculinity at the forefront and make the show into a display of their dominant sexuality instead of pure visual pleasure. Of course Pharrell would be the one to do it, and he pulls off the remarkable feat of letting the background take precedent (the color coordination, the real(-ish) people back-up dancers, Rihanna) without turning the focus away from himself. I don’t know if I’d want to exist in “Marilyn Monroe” world or not – on one hand it seems overwhelmingly estrogen-filled; on the other everyone is ridiculously beautiful and happy. Maybe if I was as awesome as Pharrell and knew how to dance I’d be able to pull it off. For now though, I’m just happy watching. He’s great, his stupid hat is great, Kelly Osbourne is great, Luis Cerveró is one to watch.
